Weezer is back, baby! I saw Weezer in 2017 and was scheduled to see him again last summer, but because of the coronavirus, it was postponed to August 2021. His new album, OK Human, just came out with “All My Favorite Songs” pre-released. I always love the dichotomy in his lyrics and sounds.
The song starts with the chorus singing,
“All my favorite songs are slow and sad
All my favorite people make me mad
Everything that feels so good is bad, bad, bad,”
Alluding to how our culture gravitates towards sad, slow songs and even the people we love can make us mad at times. Weezer is talking about the fine line between love and hate. One interpretation of the last time is that sometimes something that feels good like drugs and alcohol can be wrong for your mind, body, and spirit, but people continue to abuse it.
Verse 1 says,
“I love parties, but I don't go
Then I feel bad when I stay home
‘Cause I need a friend when I take a walk”
These lyrics hit hard for our generation. There is a constant pressure to go to parties and socialize to make connections. However, there is anxiety and fear of missing out if you don’t go, but energy-draining for having a small talk conversation in large crowds. Another meaning to the lyrics is walking alone can either represent wanting time to think to yourself or loneliness.
